The California Department of Education (CDE) has released Round 2 of the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Universal Grant Opportunity
Since 2002, the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Universal Grant Program has incentivized locally driven after-school programs. These state–funded grant programs are built through partnerships between public schools and community organizations, offering California students in kindergarten through ninth grade a safe space for academic enrichment.

Eligible applicants:
Local educational agencies (LEAs), charter schools, and city, county, or nonprofit organizations partnering with an LEA

Application Deadline:
December 3, 2025. All applications must be mailed and postmarked by the deadline.

Estimated Funding:
Approximately $30 million is available for this round.

Number of Grant Awards:
About 80 state funded grants will be awarded to California Public and Charter Schools

Grant Award Amounts:
Up to $152,612 of funding for elementary school sites and up to $203,482 for middle/junior high schools. Funding is based on the number of students qualifying for Free and Reduced-Price Meals. Larger schools may qualify for increased funding using the large-school adjustment formula.

30% (cash and/or in-kind)
Note: High schools and umbrella organizations overseeing direct-funded charter schools are not eligible. Current grantees seeking renewal must follow a separate process.
Program Requirements for the CA After School Education and Safety Grant:
ASES programs must:
- Operate every regular school day, starting immediately after school and running until 6 p.m.
- Provide a minimum of 15 hours per week of programming.
- Maintain a student-to-staff ratio of no more than 20:1.
- Offer daily nutritious snacks or meals.
- Integrate educational and literacy elements (tutoring or homework help in language arts, math, science, etc.).
- Include enrichment activities (arts, recreation, career technical education, and more).
