Presidential Election 2024: Federal Health Funding Outlook

Since 2004, McAllister & Quinn has helped hundreds of institutions secure more than $16 billion in competitive and appropriated federal funds through our grant development services.

In advance of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, we are looking at the post-November 5th horizon in terms of federal grant opportunities for hospitals and healthcare systems.

Looking back over the 20-year history of our firm, we have seen that while each administration has had different priorities, there are always many grant opportunities available to our clients each fiscal year.

Trends in Healthcare Agency Funding: 2016 to Today

From 2016 to present, with different parties in office, federal agency trends related to healthcare invariably trend upwards, regardless of dips based on shifting priorities.

While the outcome of the election is far from settled, this much we know to be true:

  • There will still be TENS of BILLIONS of dollars’ worth of grant funding opportunities available for healthcare institutions.
  • We expect that many existing successful grant programs will continue and that we will see additional funding opportunities for healthcare and related factors, such as social determinants of health.
  • The ultimate funding decisions come from Congress (who hold the power of the purse) and regardless of a red or blue majority, elected officials will have to answer to their constituents about the funding decisions that they are ultimately responsible for. Healthcare is of universal concern.
  • In the new year, competitive grant programs will remain a priority for the federal agencies and we expect that congressionally-directed earmarks will still present an opportunity regardless of which party controls Congress. Health systems will therefore continue to have pathways to federal funding to strengthen and diversify their funding base and to advance programs, research, and training opportunities.
