Honoring Our Service Members: Funding Opportunity for Veteran Suicide Prevention

Honoring Service Through Action: Supporting Veterans’ Mental Health in Memory of Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox

The loss of a service member is always deeply felt, but when that loss comes after they return home, it carries a particular weight. On July 21, 2025, Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox, a 25-year-old sniper instructor at the Army Infantry School, died by suicide. His story is a powerful reminder of the challenges many veterans continue to face long after their service ends.

Each day in the United States, an average of 18 veterans die by suicide. In 2024, the suicide rate among veterans was 34.7 per 100,000, more than double the rate of 17.1 per 100,000 among non-veterans (VA Office of Suicide Prevention). These numbers underscore an urgent need for expanded, community-based support and intervention.

In honor of Staff Sergeant Fox and all veterans who have lost their lives to suicide, Congress established the VA Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program. This initiative provides funding to private institutions, foundations, Indian Tribes, community-based organizations, and state or local governments working to reduce suicide risk and improve veterans’ mental health, well-being, and financial stability.
