(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) has been awarded a $1 million grant through the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s FY 2024 STOP School Violence Program. The three-year grant will provide critical support to enhance school safety measures, address the long-term effects of trauma, and promote a positive educational environment for students and staff.

This funding was secured in partnership with McAllister & Quinn and the Greenlights Grant Initiative, founded by Camila and Matthew McConaughey. The initiative aims to simplify the grant application process and provide essential resources to schools in need.

“This well-deserved grant reflects our shared dedication to creating safe and supportive learning environments for children across the nation” said Ellen Riddleberger, Senior Vice President at McAllister & Quinn. “It was an honor to work with Superintendent Ashley Cholis, the team at UCISD, and the Greenlights Grant Initiative, to ensure that Uvalde received funding for this important work.”

The grant will be used to implement the Uvalde Unity Project: Promoting Safety Through Service-Learning. This initiative integrates trauma recovery and safety strategies to directly benefit 360 students with intensive support and provide interventions for an additional 720 students in grades 1 through 9. The program is designed to improve attendance, reduce behavioral issues, and foster a safer, more supportive school climate.

Superintendent Ashley Chohlis highlighted the significance of the funding, stating, “Uvalde CISD is appreciative of the Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance, the awarding agency. The support of the Greenlights Grant Initiative and the office of Congressman Tony Gonzales was instrumental in securing this grant that will change the trajectory of the trauma impact of the Robb Elementary tragedy.”

Acknowledging the lasting effects of the Robb Elementary tragedy, part of the funding will provide wraparound services to support healing and resilience among affected students. These services aim to address trauma comprehensively while equipping students with the tools they need to continue their education in a nurturing environment.
