Maryland State Grant Improves Safety and Visibility at Barclay Greenmount Apartments in Baltimore, MD
This project was supported by a $97,734 Community Health and Safety Works grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) recently completed a community safety improvement project at Barclay Greenmount Apartments, bringing new exterior lighting and security features to an affordable housing community in Baltimore’s Barclay and Greenmount West neighborhoods.
Barclay Greenmount is an affordable historic row home community of 139 residences. Residents and staff identified poorly lit walkways, entrances, alleys, and courtyards as safety concerns, particularly during evening hours.
Through this project, AHC:
-
Installed new LED exterior lighting at the front and rear of 80 residential buildings.
-
Added LED floodlighting in high traffic and previously dark areas.
-
Installed security cameras near resident services and management spaces.
At Barclay Greenmount, Lighting is Everything
Well‑lit environments help prevent crime while also contributing to residents’ sense of safety. The new lighting improves safe access to local schools, transit, and businesses, and it creates a more welcoming environment for AHC’s on‑site programming.
Additionally, the project aligns with AHC’s approach of creating quality affordable homes paired with holistic resident services.
How State Grant Funding Can Support Nonprofits’ Goals
AHC’s work at Barclay Greenmount demonstrates how targeted state investment, paired with experienced nonprofit leadership, can directly improve residents’ daily lives.
McAllister & Quinn was proud to support AHC in securing this Maryland state grant and advancing a project that reflects AHC’s mission‑driven approach to affordable housing and community well‑being.
